Position Summary:

Vallen's Purchasing Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day purchasing and inventory activities within their assigned areas. Make decisions with regards to personnel and the control of company assets. Maintain communications with other departments to ensure the highest quality of customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned)

  • Directly supervises the Buying Team.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Manage the Purchasing/Inventory Systems.
  • Maintain and improve the purchasing processes and procedures.
  • Control inventory with regards to size, age, turns, and quality.
  • Maintain service levels to the customer as agreed upon.
  • Manage, lead, and train buyers and expeditors.
  • Most segments will require management of $100/million dollars or more in inventory assets and the purchasing responsibilities thereof.
  • Responsible for management of inventory and purchasing for the full range of distribution products.
  • Travel may be required.


       Education and/or Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year College.
  • 3-5 years related Management experience and/or training.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a buyer of capital goods.
  • Or Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advance Inventory Management Applications preferred.
  • Advanced MS Excel (Pivot/V look up) preferred.
  • Distribution industry preferred.


  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and with little supervision.
  • Must demonstrate good time management skills.
  • Must possess strong planning, organizational and execution skills.
  • Must have the ability to set goals and meet deadlines.
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Must demonstrate ownership of assigned responsibilities and ability to get the job done correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Must possess a proactive and positive team approach to problem resolution.
  • Must have the ability to establish strong working relationships with co-workers and management.
  • Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct supervisor of a department, section, unit, or group involving responsibility for results in terms of cost, methods and personnel. Full accountability for hiring, discipline, discharge, performance appraisals, salary administration, etc.
