Position Summary:

The Service Technician III- Compressed Air provides customers with on-site technical solutions to a wide array of complicated field issues involving mechanical and electrical failures in a timely, efficient and courteous manner.  These technical solutions include but not limited to troubleshooting, performance evaluation, service maintenance, emergency repair, and proper installation of multiple types of customer air compressors and related compressed air products.  The Service Technician III – Compressed Air travels to a variety of customer locations such as Industrial Manufacturing, Food and Beverage, Cement Mills, and Power Generation where they will interact directly with multiple levels of the organization within these customer locations

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs advanced preventative maintenance on rotary air compressors, small reciprocating air compressors, refrigerated air dryers, desiccant air dryers, specialty compressed air equipment (Centrifugal, HP, etc.), competitive compressed air equipment, and refrigerant air dryers.
  • Troubleshoots and determines when and what kind of maintenance is needed; repairs or maintains the operating condition of a wide variety of industrial compressed air equipment air including variable speed drive rotary compressors, compressed air dryers, desiccant air dryers, compressed air accessories, oil-free rotary compressors, competitive compressed air equipment, and possibly refrigerant air dryers.
  • Mentors and instructs less experienced Service Technicians.
  • Studies manufacturers' manuals to determine correct installation or operation of machinery.
  • Performs inspections to determine cause of operating errors; makes decisions on corrective course of action.
  • Enters codes and instructions to program computer-controlled machinery.
  • Observes and tests the operation of machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters, ammeters, infrared thermometers or other testing devices; dial, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Analyzes test results, machine error messages, or information obtained from operators to diagnose equipment problems.
  • Disassembles machinery or equipment to remove parts and make repairs. Examines parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear.  Repairs or replaces worn, broken or malfunctioning components of machinery or equipment.  Reassembles equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  • Cleans, lubricates, or adjusts parts, equipment, or machinery; adjust equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Operates newly repaired machinery or equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs.
  • Records parts or materials used and order or requisition new parts or materials as necessary.
  • Records repairs and maintenance performed.
  • May cut and weld metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, or assemble new equipment.
  • Demonstrates equipment functions and features to customer
  • Upsells Vallen products and services to improve the reliability and efficiency of customer’s operations.
  • Safely operates company-provided service vehicle to, from, and on customer sites.
  • Effectively communicates verbally and in writing with co-workers and customers.
Required Skills

Job Qualifications:



  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical Diploma, certificate or Associate’s Degree in technical field is preferred.
  • Experience with maintenance and repair of compressed air equipment is preferred.
  • Previous experience (0-2 years) experience with Industrial Machinery Maintenance, Electrical, or HVAC
  • Advanced knowledge and ability to conduct some safety assessments of a continuously changing work environment.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of wiring schematics.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of some typical compressed air components, and their functions.
  • Advanced ability to perform preventative maintenance on rotary air compressors, small reciprocating air compressors, refrigerated air dryers, desiccant air dryers.
  • Mastery of, advanced expertise, knowledge and/or certification with a specialized equipment including:
    • Troubleshooting and repair variable speed drive rotary compressors.
    • Preventative maintenance on specialty compressed air equipment (i.e. Centrifugal, HP, etc.).
    • Preventative maintenance on competitive compressed air equipment.
    • Troubleshooting and repair refrigerated or desiccant air dryers, including certification, knowledge, and ability to handle refrigerant.
    • Troubleshooting and repair fixed speed oil-free rotary compressors.
    • Troubleshooting and repair competitive compressed air equipment.
  • Ability to provide mentorship of advanced services less experienced technicians.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to Lockout, Tagout, and Test, and NFPA 70E with company provided training.
  • Must provide own basic hand tools.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and ability to maintain acceptable driving history and DOT driver certification.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment background check and possibly periodic customer required drug screen, and DOT driver certification physical.
