The Opportunity

Vallen is hiring a rock star Human Resources Director who will serve as a member of the HR leadership team and be responsible for developing and implementing the HR strategy with a focus on recruiting and employee relations. This role is responsible for creating, aligning and executing plans and programs that drive highly effective human capital within our organization while ensuring HR excellence.

The HR Director along with his/her direct reports is responsible for working with leaders across the organization to identify, engage, develop and retain talent by effectively handling employee relations, performance management, project management, succession planning and development. The Director will be responsible for overseeing and executing best in class HR practices and programs within the organization.  He or she will role model Vallen’s values while building a culture of commitment, accountability, and opportunity.  This role will office out of Vallen’s HQ in Belmont, NC (Charlotte area), report to the VP of Human Resources, and have direct reports.  Vallen is part of the Sonepar family of companies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the organization to identify, partner and execute key talent management initiatives such as leadership development, talent/performance management, change management, workforce and succession planning, and coaching (employee and manager).
  • Partner across the HR team to ensure alignment and lead a Recruiting and field HR Business Partner team to support business objectives and execute Vallen’s HR strategy.
  • Oversee the implementation and maintenance of applicant tracking, onboarding, and other systems to ensure ease of use, training, and reporting. Will owe the relationship with temporary staffing and other vendors.
  • Coach, counsel, and guide managers on all employee related issues; conduct investigations, and recommend the course of action to best balance the needs of stakeholders in a legally compliant manner.
  • Support line management in forecasting and planning talent pipeline requirements, and lead and empower the Recruiting team to identify a pool of well qualified candidates. In addition, partner with Sonepar’s Recruiting team as appropriate.

Work with Managers and other HR leaders to implement employee training and development, manage its delivery, and ensure career pathing.

  • Actively manage Vallen’s social media content and calendar and maximize usage of Linkedin, Glassdoor, Indeed and other channels to maximize candidate flow and messaging in the employment marketplace.
  • Participate in organizational design initiates to position assigned client groups for growth and success, which may include writing job descriptions, partnering with Compensation professionals, and others.
  • Manage and drive large-scale projects as determined in the HR planning process and participate in functional and cross-functional initiatives; provide best practice guidance and influence when appropriate to drive outcomes.
  • Maintain close contact with the parent company’s HR Shared Services team to ensure alignment with objectives and goals.
  • Prepare, recommend, and maintain policies, records and procedures for controlling personnel transactions and reporting personnel data.
  • All other tasks and duties assigned.

Qualifications & Benefits

  • Bachelor’s degree required in a business discipline, Human Resources, or related field; current HR certificate strongly preferred. MBA or master’s degree a plus but not required.
  • Ten or more years progressive human resources experience with strong background in employment practices, recruiting, training, organization development, legal compliance, and/or talent assessment. Two or more years at the HR Director level with a large multi-site organization in the warehouse/logistics, manufacturing, or retail industries strongly preferred.
  • Experience partnering with executive leadership across multiple functional areas including sales and/or operations client groups.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to work both tactically and at high level; an affinity for metrics and the ability to demonstrate business results.
  • Prior experience managing a geographically disperse team to empower high level performance. The ability to coach and develop others both in HR and other functional areas.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop strong internal and external relationships; and interact with associates at various levels including a large non-exempt population.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence, and creative problem-solving skills are required.
  • A preference for technology and the ability to learn new systems.
  • Possess strong assessment, root cause analysis, and decision-making skills and influence others to follow best practices/outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing organization-wide projects and programs required.
  • Requires an HR professional who is flexible, who can easily link HR/business issues, and who can respond quickly (sense of urgency) and effectively to business issues.
  • Must be able to travel, including occasional, short overnight stays.
